5 Family Fun at Home: End-of-Summer Backyard Campout

By Karla Andrews, INHC - Publisher, Chef, Community Educator August 22, 2025

As the long summer days slowly give way to school schedules and busier routines, there’s still time to squeeze in one last family adventure... right in your own backyard! A backyard campout is the perfect way to celebrate the end of summer. It’s simple, affordable, and creates magical memories for kids without ever leaving home.

Here’s your guide to planning a cozy and fun-filled campout under the stars:

Set the Scene with a Tent (or Fort!)

You don’t need fancy gear to camp out at home. A simple pop-up tent works perfectly, but if you don’t have one, get creative! Build a fort using blankets, sheets, and some sturdy chairs. Let the kids help...it makes it even more exciting when they see their “camp” come to life.

S’mores and Snacks

No campout is complete without s’mores. You can toast marshmallows over a small fire pit (with adult supervision, of course) or even roast them in the oven or microwave if you don’t have one. Lay out graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows, and maybe even some fun extras like peanut butter cups or strawberries for a twist.
For extra camp vibes, pack a “snack bag” for each family member with trail mix, popcorn, or fruit.

Games & Activities

Keep the kids entertained with classic backyard games and camp activities:

  • Flashlight Tag – A favorite once the sun sets.
  • Scavenger Hunt – Hide small items around the yard and give kids a list of things to find.
  • Storytelling Circle – Share silly, spooky, or made-up stories by flashlight.
  • Sing-Along – A mini family sing-along session can make the night feel like true camping.

Stargazing Magic

When the excitement calms down, spread out blankets and lay back to watch the night sky. Point out constellations, make up your own star stories, or just enjoy the quiet moment together. (Tip: Download a free stargazing app to help identify planets and stars!)

Sweet Dreams Outdoors

If the kids are old enough, challenge them to spend the night outdoors in the tent or fort. Younger children may want to come inside when it’s time for bed, and that’s perfectly okay—the fun is in the experience.

Why Try a Backyard Campout?

  • No travel required = less stress for parents.
  • Budget-friendly family adventure.
  • Kids get to experience the wonder of camping with the comforts of home nearby.
  • It’s a simple way to savor the last warm summer nights together.

So grab the marshmallows, pitch that tent, and spend one more night soaking in summer’s magic with your family.
